Dear friend, activist ally & brother of 30+ years, Paul Eagle’s journey Onward leaves us a legacy of seeking truth and unleashing forces of goodness, to the benefit of everyone. Born Paul Julius Spiegel in 1955 New Jersey, he was a wide-awake soul who saw deep and far wherever he turned his mind, including twice at MIT to study electrical engineering and then botany. (Sounds like the man, digging every good-humored day of science and reason on life’s behalf.) I met Paul in 1992’s Boston campaign to un-welcome Columbus, we shared later causes—and then Paul the web-wizard put untold labor of love into every page and element of ANCIENTLIGHTS.ORG (our collaborative multimedia educational site still going/growing strong). I’m told that he passed with a smile on his face and I will carry it fiercely always.
Three central things for which Paul’s Eagle’s multi-talents worked all his years: Ecological Sense, Economic Justice, and Egalitarian Culture. Paul, the countless people (and critters) you helped and the world you made better will always miss and remember you. For you, dear friend, I’m hearing these songs. May the long-time sun shine upon you.
